Fences & Walls

Overview

Fences and walls are allowed to be built along property lines as long as they do not exceed the maximum height. In general, fences or walls may not exceed six feet in height along the rear and side property lines and no more than three feet in height within the front setback area. In addition, fences and walls along side and rear property lines, outside of the front setback area, may have an additional one foot of lattice which allows for the passage of light and air (total maximum height, seven feet). Fences and walls along side property lines may not exceed three feet in height within the front setback area.

Height is measured from the bottom to the top of the fence or wall. Fences placed on top of a retaining wall do not include the height of the retaining wall. Fences and walls on corner lots have additional requirements.

Barbed wire, razor wire, and electric fences are prohibited on fences or walls in residential based zoning districts.

Permit Requirements

Fences (wood, chain link, other metal, etc) four feet or under are exempt from building permits. Fences above four feet in height are required to obtain a building permit. All masonry walls regardless of height are required to obtain a building permit.
