Building Permits Required

Building Inspection Process                  Building Permits Application                 Fence Permit Application

The Butler City Council adopted the following 2012 edition building codes on October 15, 2013: International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code, ICC Electrical Code, International Property Maintenance Code, and the International Fuel Gas Code. These codes became effective on October 15, 2013. The City of Butler requires building permits for:

  • new construction
  • additions
  • fences
  • roofing
  • carports
  • garages
  • storage buildings (over 120 sq. ft)
  • interior work that requires the cutting of structural members
  • relocating walls
  • removal or change of any required means of egress
  • electrical wiring
  • plumbing or mechanical work affecting public health or general safety.

The Building Official or his representative may require a survey of the property if the property owner is unable to accurately designate the location of their property lines when they are needed to determine yard setback requirements that are required in the zoning regulations.

Roofs: The International Residential Code requires replacement of roofs where the existing roof has two or more applications of any type of roof covering. The City requires a permit for adding a second layer of shingles but there is no fee. Roof replacement requires a permit and payment of a fee based on project cost.

Carports meet the definition of a building in the City Code and therefore are subject to zoning and building reviews. Please contact City Hall at (660) 679-4182 prior to building or placing pre-fabricated buildings on your property. Buildings constructed without a permit are subject to removal.

Fences: Submit the permit application along with a drawing/printout of your yard and where the proposed fence will be placed to City Hall.
