Municipal Code

The Butler City Council adopted the following 2012 edition building codes on October 15, 2013, which include:  The International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Plumbing Code, International Mechanical Code, ICC Electrical Code, International Property Maintenance Code, and the International Fuel Gas Code.

The City of Butler requires building permits for:

  • new construction
  • additions
  • driveways
  • fences
  • roofing
  • carports
  • garages
  • storage building over 120 sq. ft.
  • interior work that requires the cutting of structural members
  • swimming pools
  • relocating walls
  • removal or change of any required means of egress
  • electrical wiring
  • plumbing or mechanical work affecting public health or general safety.

The Building Official or his representative may require a survey of the property if the property owner is unable to accurately designate the location of their property lines when they are needed to determine yard setback requirements that are required in the zoning regulations.

Roofs:  The International Residential Code requires replacement of roofs where the existing roof has two or more applications of any type of roof covering.  The City requires a permit for installing a new roof or when adding a second layer of shingles and payment of a flat fee of $35.00.

Carports meet the definition of a building in the City Code and therefore are subject to zoning and building reviews.  Please contact the Building Inspector at 660-679-6323 prior to building or placing a pre-fabricated building on your property.  Buildings constructed without a permit are subject to removal.
